His life was a cruel joke in the hands of even crueler gods. Ruairi sat slumped against the corner of the small cell Cliona ordered Conor to throw him in after her interrogation.
He had now seen the inside of two cells in his brief lifetime, and had grown up thinking he would never see the inside of one. But here he was for the second time in less than a full moon in Braon.
Ruairi couldnât stop shaking.
It was all too familiar, too terrifying, and he didnât know what would come next. He couldnât imagine Cliona would take it as far as the laochs in Castle Eagla had, but she had already used her esos on him, sifting through his mind like sand. He had fought back as hard as he could to bury his secrets from her, but he knew it hadnât been enough.
His mind had revealed the ring hidden in his sock, and Cliona had ripped it from him. He had failed again. This failure felt like the very worst of them. Why would Cliona hand over control of an army of the husks to the Udar? It was all beyond him, but it confirmed every suspicion he had ever had of the Mathair.
Sinister forces were at play during the time of the ninth generation, and Ruairi had unintentionally played right into them.
There was one thing he was thankful for among it all. Cliona had not been able to gather any information about Aislaâs whereabouts, since he truly had none for her to find. If she was protected still, Ruairi had hope. He didnât know how she would take his discoveries, but he knew that if she saw him locked up like this by her own grandmother, it would be enough to turn her against the Mathair.
If she could ever find him.
Ruairi wondered what stories Cliona would spin to his family. What lies would spread throughout Caillte when it became evident he was missing?
The cell in Castle Farraige was different than his had been in Castle Eagla. Here he shared a hall with other cells, all with barred walls, so the prisoners within could still see and speak to each other through them. In Castle Eagla, he had been in a walled room and had never met another prisoner in their halls.
There was one female in front of his cell and to the left, but she had not moved from the corner of her cell since he had arrived. Ruairi vaguely recognized her from what he could make out of her face in the dim torchlight. She was a couple of years ahead of him in scoil.
Across from him was Eitri.
Eitri had slung a slew of curses his way when Conor brought Ruairi in. He was angry, and understandably so. Shame heated Ruairiâs cheeks with each insult. Ruairi had never meant to get him wrapped up in this. He had only needed answers to his questions, and a confirmation of his suspicions.
When he first arrived to the dungeons of the castle, he wondered if Edi had gotten wrapped up in it as well.
